Expats, does speaking your language matter in interior design?
Interior design is more than just aesthetics. Designing a space means telling a story—the story of the person who will live there. And for that, speaking the client’s language and understanding their culture are invaluable assets!
Language: a bridge to understanding deep needs
Words are more than just communication tools; they convey emotions, lifestyle habits, and ways of thinking. When a client speaks in their native language, they express themselves with more nuance, spontaneity, and authenticity. They can highlight sensations, memories, and preferences that guide the project and enrich the design process.
Culture: a source of inspiration and adaptation
A successful interior is a space where one truly feels at home. However, the concepts of comfort, elegance, and functionality vary from one culture to another. Understanding a client’s culture allows me to:
🔹 Anticipate their expectations – A Japanese interior favors emptiness and balance, while a Mediterranean interior embraces light and conviviality.
🔹 Adapt materials and colors – Certain tones and textures hold strong cultural meanings.
🔹 Designing a tailored interior is also about translating an identity – When a client speaks to me in their native language, they don’t just share a wish list; they share a part of themselves. By integrating this richness into the design, I can create a space that truly reflects who they are.
My International Journey Gives Me an Intuitive Approach to Design!
Having lived and worked abroad, speaking multiple languages, and immersing myself in diverse cultures allow me to better understand the expectations of my international clients. Every journey, every encounter has taught me new ways of perceiving space, organizing volumes, and selecting colors and materials.
This openness enables me to adapt my projects with precision, taking into account cultural sensitivities, personal references, and individual lifestyles.
Because ultimately, a great interior designer doesn’t just create a space—they bring a way of living to life!
